When and how to pray seated

Question

I have seen many pregnant women pray sitting down. However, they all sit in markedly different ways. Is there a set way to pray when sitting?

Answer

Muslims, both men and, should pray their obligatory prayer in a standing position. They may not pray seated if they have the ability to stand.

Voluntary prayers are a different matter. A person may pray them while seated even if he can do so standing up. However, if he prefers to sit while he has the ability to stand, his reward will be half of that attained by standing in prayer.

If a person cannot stand up, he should pray seated in a cross-legged position if possible. If this is not possible, then he may sit however it is possible for him to do so.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Pray while standing. If you cannot, then pray seated…”

Allah says: “Fear Allah as much as you can.” [SĂ»rah al-Taghâbun: 16]

Allah also says: “On no soul does Allah place a burden greater than it can bear.” [SĂ»rah al-Baqarah: 286]

And Allah knows best.
