Question

When must the walîmah be held? I have been told that the walîmah is done so that people may know that the couple have consummated the marriage.

Answer

The walîmah (wedding feast) is a celebration of the marriage. It is Sunnah and not something obligatory. The walîmah is the festival for announcing the marriage so that people know it has taken place and so the difference between the lawful and unlawful relationship can be publicly recognized. Exactly when it should take place is really something that is open.

The walîmah is not contingent upon consummation the marriage. The walîmah can take place before consummation. Consummation of the marriage may be delayed and not take place until some later time. When to consummate the marriage is something that is left entirely up to the personal choice of the husband and wife. They may consummate their marriage immediately after executing the marriage contract or after a period of time.

Any kind of food may be served at the walîmah, even without meat or bread. It was related by Anas b. Mâlik that he said: “I have invited the Muslims to the wedding food of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and there was no bread or meat, but only dates and clarified butter."
