Question
I was asked by the head of nursing at a major hospital in Dammam on the Islamic ruling on what to do with the placenta (the after birth). I believe this question arose due to the fact that there are cosmetic companies that use the placenta in the manufacturing of beauty products. The head of nursing's question is whether it is obligatory to bury it or if it is permissible to give it away to a third party.
Answer
The placenta is part of the woman’s body. It should be buried in the same way that other human body parts must be buried if they are cut off.
It may not be used for cosmetic purposes by companies or by anyone else.
However, it may be donated for dire need to someone else if there is a medical necessity.
And Allah knows best.
