THE MIRACLES OF JESUS

Jesus in the Quran holds one of the highest statures amongst the Prophets.  Unlike other Prophets who performed miracles, Jesus himself was a miracle, as he was born of a virgin mother, and God describes him and his mother Mary as such:

"…and We made her (Mary) and her son (Jesus) a sign for the worlds." (Quran 21:91)

Nonetheless, in the Quran, Jesus is described as having many miracles not bestowed upon other prophets.  God says:

"And We gave unto Jesus, son of Mary, clear miracles" (Quran 2:87)

The following is a brief description of the miracles performed by Jesus mentioned in the Quran.

1.             A Table Laden with Food

In the fifth chapter of the Quran, "The Table Laden with Food" – named after this miracle of Jesus, God narrates how the disciples of Jesus requested him to ask God to send down a table laden with food, and for it to be a special day of commemoration for them in the future.

"When the disciples said: O Jesus, son of Mary!  Is your Lord able to send down for us a table spread with food from heaven?  He said: Observe your duty to God, if ye are true believers.  They said: We desire to eat of it and our hearts be at rest, and that We may know that you have spoken truth to us, and that We may be witnesses thereof.  Jesus, son of Mary, said: 'O God, our Lord, send down for us a Table laden with food out of heaven, that shall be for us a recurring festival, the first and last of us, and a miracle from You.  And provide us our sustenance, for You are the best of providers!" (Quran 5:112-114)

Since the occasion was to be "for us a recurring festival," it is likely the Last Supper,[1]  also called the Lord's Supper, Breaking of Bread, Eucharist, or Communion.  The Eucharist has always been at the center of Christian worship.  Encyclopedia Britannica says:

"Eucharist is a Christian sacrament commemorating the action of Jesus at his Last Supper with his disciples … The letters of Paul and the Acts of the Apostles make it clear that early Christianity believed that this institution included a mandate to continue the celebration… The Eucharist has formed a central rite of Christian worship."[2]

2.      While Still in the Cradle

One of the miracles mentioned in the Quran, although not mentioned in the Bible, is that fact that Jesus, while still in the cradle, spoke out to protect his mother Mary from any accusations people may have placed on her due to having a child without a father.  When she was approached about this strange incident after her childbirth, Mary merely pointed to Jesus, and he miraculously spoke, just as God had promised her upon annunciation.

"He shall speak to people while still in the cradle, and in manhood, and he shall be from the righteous." (Quran 3:46)

Jesus said to the people:

"I am indeed a slave of God.  He has given me the Book and made me a Prophet, and He has made me blessed wherever I may be.  And He has enjoined upon me prayers, and to pay the alms, as long as I live and (He has made me) kind to my mother, and He has not made me insolent, unblessed.  And may Peace be upon me the day I was born, and the day I die, and on the Day I shall be raised to life." (Quran 19:30-33)

3.      And It Becomes a Bird

God mentions a miracle given to none other in the Quran but Jesus.  This miracle was one which none can argue its greatness.  God mentions in the Quran that Jesus says:

"I create for you out of clay the likeness of a bird, then I breathe into it and it becomes a bird with God’s permission." (Quran 3:49)

This miracle is not found in the New Testament, but it is found in the non-canonical ‘Infancy Gospel of Thomas,’  "When this boy, Jesus, was five years old, he was playing at the ford of a rushing stream… he then made soft clay and shaped it into twelve sparrows… but Jesus simply clapped his hands and shouted to the sparrows: "Be off, fly away, and remember me, you who are now alive!"  And the sparrows took off and flew away noisily." (Infancy Gospel of Thomas:2)

4.      Healing the Blind and the Leper

Similar to the New Testament[3], The Quran also mentions Jesus to a have healed the blind and lepers.

"I also heal the blind and the leper." (Quran 3:49)

The Jews during the time of Jesus were quite advanced in the science of medicine and were quite proud of their achievements.  For this reason, miracles of this nature were given by God to Jesus, ones which the Jews could well understand that no force in nature could perform its like.

5.      The Resurrection of the Dead

"…and I bring to life the dead, by the permission of God." (Quran 3:49)

This, like the creation of a bird, was a miracle of incomparable nature, one which should have caused the Jews to believe in the prophethood of Jesus without doubt.  In the New Testament, we read three cases where Jesus brought the dead back to life by God’s permission - the daughter of Jairus (Matt 9:18, 23; Mark 5:22, 35; Luke 8:40, 49), the widow's son at Nain (Luke 7:11), and Lazarus (John 11:43).

6.      The Provisions of Today and Tomorrow

Jesus was given the miracle of knowing what people had just eaten, as well as what they had in store for the coming days.  God says.

"I inform you too of what things you eat, and what you store up in your houses.  Surely in that is a sign for you, if you are believers." (Quran 3:49)

A Demonstration of Truth

Similar to other prophets, Jesus performed miracles to convince skeptics of his truthfulness, not to demonstrate his divinity.  The Quran says:

"Surely in that is a sign for you, if you are believers." (Quran 3:49)

These miracles were performed only by the Will of God, had he not willed them to occur, they could never come to be.  God explicitly states this in the Quran, saying that they were:

"…by the permission of God" (Quran 3:49; 5:10)

Although Muslims can not confirm it, the Bible, through certain narrations, states that Jesus at times failed to perform miracles.  Once when Jesus tried to heal a blind man, he was not healed after the first attempt, and Jesus had to try a second time (Mark 8: 22-26).  In another instance, "He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them."(Mark 6:5)

The fact remains that indeed it was not through his own will that Jesus or any other prophet performed miracles.  Rather, they were performed only by Will of God Almighty - a fact also explicitly stated in the Bible:

"A man attested to you by God with miracles and wonders and signs which God performed through him in your midst." (Acts 2:22)

Belief in the Heavenly Books

In the cave of Hiraa’ and away from people, Jibreel (Gabriel) came down to our Prophet Muhammad  sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention ) while he was worshiping Allah The Almighty The One Who Has no partner and said to him: "Recite." Muhammad  sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention ) said, "I cannot recite,". Jibreel pressed him hard and repeated the order ‘Recite.’ ‘I cannot recite’ said he trembling and terrified, and once again he pressed him hard and said: ‘Recite.’ Again he answered while shaking and trembling ‘I cannot recite.’ Jibreel held him for the third time then released him and said: {Recite in the name of your Lord who created.} [Quran 96: 1]

Then this situation comes to an end and Jibreel disappears. Muhammad hurries back home, trembling and sweating profusely. He enters upon his wife Khadeejah and says to her: Cover me, cover me. [Al-Bukhari] She covers him with wool covers, and wipes the sweat from his forehead.

The Will of Allah The Almighty has been fulfilled and the seal prophet on earth was chosen to convey the call of Allah The Almighty to His slaves. The verse mentioned above was the first verse that Allah The Almighty revealed to His Messenger from the Noble Quran which is the book that Allah The Almighty chose to be the ever-lasting miracle and clear argument with the seal of the Prophets. This book is not the only book that Allah The Almighty has sent down; rather, there are other books such as Tawraah (Torah) Injeel (Gospel), Zaboor (Psalms), and Suhuf (Scriptures).

The Muslim individual believes in all books that Allah The Almighty revealed to His Prophets and Messengers in much the same way as he believes in the Noble Quran which Allah The Almighty revealed to Muhammad  sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention ). Allah The Almighty mentioned some of these books in the Noble Quran and did not mention some others. Allah The Almighty Says (what means): {Mankind was [of] one religion [before their deviation]; then Allah sent the prophets as bringers of good tidings and warners and sent down with them the Scripture in truth to judge between the people concerning that in which they differed. And none differed over the Scripture except those who were given it - after the clear proofs came to them - out of jealous animosity among themselves. And Allah guided those who believed to the truth concerning that over which they had differed.} [Quran 2: 213]

Amongst the books that Allah The Almighty mentioned in the Noble Quran are:

1. The Scriptures of Ibraaheem (Abraham) and Moosa (Moses), may Allah exalt their mention:

They are the Scriptures that Allah The Almighty sent down to Ibraaheem and Musa, may Allah exalt their mention. Allah The Almighty Says (what means):

• {Or has he not been informed of what was in the scriptures of Moses. And [of] Abraham, who fulfilled [his obligations]} [Quran 53: 36-37]

• {Indeed, this is in the former scriptures, The scriptures of Abraham and Moses} [Quran 87: 18-19]

Abu Tharr, may Allah be pleased with him, said: I said: O Messenger of Allah! How were the Scriptures of Ibraaheem, may Allah exalt his mention? He said: They were full of examples; O Arrogant tested domineering king! I have not sent you to collect the vain gains of this world, but rather I sent you to respond to the supplication of the wronged person on my behalf for I never reject it even if it is from a disbeliever. Every sane person must – as long as his mind is not absent - take time to invoke his lord, time to bring himself to account, time to contemplate the creation of Allah The Almighty, and time to seek his needs from food and drinking.
Every sane person must not move except for three things: preparing the provision for the appointed time, improving his life and enjoying a lawful pleasure. Also, every sane person must be mindful of his time, must look after his affairs and protect his tongue (from obscene speech). Whoever thinks of his speech as part of his deeds, he will not speak except in what is beneficial for him.
Then I said: O Messenger of Allah! How were the Scriptures of Moosa (Moses), may Allah exalt his mention? He said: “They were full of wisdoms: I am amazed at the one who is certain of death and then he feels happy. I am amazed at the one who is certain of Hell and then he laughs. I am amazed at the one who is certain of preordainance and then he exhausts himself. I am amazed at the one who has seen the world and how the fortunes of its people change and then he feels reassured. I am amazed at the one who is certain of Reckoning tomorrow and then he does not work.”

2. Tawraah (Torah)

It is the book that Allah The Almighty revealed to Moosa (Moses), may Allah exalt his mention, and ordered the prophets who came after him to establish and fulfill its rulings, for Allah The Almighty sent them and did not send any books with them; rather, He made Tawraah their book and religion. Allah The Almighty Says (what means): {Indeed, We sent down the Torah, in which was guidance and light. The prophets who submitted [to Allah ] judged by it for the Jews, as did the rabbis and scholars by that with which they were entrusted of the Scripture of Allah , and they were witnesses thereto.} [Quran 5: 44] Allah The Almighty called he Tawraah “Al-Furqaan” in the Noble Quran.

3. Az-Zaboor (Psalms)

It is one of the heavenly books. Allah The Almighty revealed it to Daawood (David), may Allah exalt his mention. Allah The Almighty Says (what means): {And to David We gave the book [of Psalms].} [Quran 17: 55] Daawood, may Allah exalt his mention, used to read a great deal in Az-Zaboor which the Messenger of Allah  sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention ) named Quran because of its similarity to the Noble Quran in their miraculousness. He  sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention ) said: “The reciting of the Zaboor (i.e. Psalms) was made easy for Daawood. He used to order that his riding animals be saddled, and would finish reciting the Zaboor before they were saddled. And he would never eat except from the earnings of his manual work.” [Al-Bukhari]

Allah The Almighty sent down in Az-Zaboor precious wisdoms and praises of Him. Allah The Almighty did not reveal in it any rulings of the permissible and prohibited actions for they were enjoined to take their rulings from the Tawraah.

4. Injeel (Gospel)

Allah The Almighty revealed it to ‘Eesa (Jesus), may Allah exalt his mention. Allah The Almighty Says (what means):

• {And We sent, following in their footsteps, Jesus, the son of Mary, confirming that which came before him in the Torah; and We gave him the Gospel, in which was guidance and light and confirming that which preceded it of the Torah as guidance and instruction for the righteous.} [Quran 5: 46]
• {Then We sent following their footsteps Our messengers and followed [them] with Jesus, the son of Mary, and gave him the Gospel} [Quran 57: 27]

Wisdom behind revealing Books

The Muslim individual believes that these books were revealed by Allah The Almighty. They called to At-Tawheed (monotheism) and to associating nothing with Him. Allah The Almighty Says (what means): {And We certainly sent into every nation a messenger, [saying], "Worship Allah and avoid Taghut.} [Quran 16: 36]

The Muslim believes that the wisdom behind revealing books is to guide human beings to the straight path of Allah The Almighty, eliminate disagreement and discord from among them, bear for them the glad tidings of the pleasure of Allah The Almighty if they obeyed Him and warn them against His punishment if the disobeyed Him; and that the heavenly books – other than the Noble Quran – have not remained in their original state in which Allah The Almighty sent them down; rather, they were exposed to alteration and distortion and the words of humans have mingled with the Words of Allah The Almighty in them.

Forms of the distortion of the Divinly Revealed Books

Distortion of the divinely revealed books took different forms. The Noble Quran mentioned some of them such as:

1- Hiding some verses, Allah The Almighty Says (what means): {O People of the Scripture, there has come to you Our Messenger making clear to you much of what you used to conceal of the Scripture and overlooking much.} [Quran 5: 15]
2- Misinterpretation of the intended meanings of the verses, Allah The Almighty Says (what means): {And indeed, there is among them a party who alter the Scripture with their tongues so you may think it is from the Scripture, but it is not from the Scripture. And they say, "This is from Allah," but it is not from Allah. And they speak untruth about Allah while they know.} [Quran 3: 78]
3- Displacing verses from their original places. Allah The Almighty Says (what means): {Among the Jews are those who distort words from their [proper] usages and say, "We hear and disobey.} [Quran 4: 46]
4- Adding what is not from the Book to it; Allah The Almighty Says (what means): {And among them are unlettered ones who do not know the Scripture except in wishful thinking, but they are only assuming. So woe to those who write the "scripture" with their own hands, then say, "This is from Allah ," in order to exchange it for a small price. Woe to them for what their hands have written and woe to them for what they earn.} [Quran 2: 78-79]

Distortion of the Tawraah (Torah)

Belief in the Tawraah that Allah The Almighty revealed to Moosa, may Allah exalt his mention, is one of the main pillars of the religion of Islam. Muslims believe that it included all goodness, called for the worship of Allah Alone and it was a light and guidance. Allah The Almighty Says (what means): {Indeed, We sent down the Torah, in which was guidance and light.} [Quran 5: 44]

However, the Tawraah that was revealed to Moosa, may Allah exalt his mention, does not exist anymore in its original state. The claimed Tawraah of nowadays was written by many writers and in different times. It was distorted and altered.

Amongst the material proofs of its distortion is that the Tawraah that is in the hands of Christians is different from the one that is in the hands of Jews. The Noble Quran recorded that distortion and rebuked the Jews for their distortion and alteration of the Tawraah. Allah The Almighty Says (what means): {Do you covet [the hope, O believers], that they would believe for you while a party of them used to hear the words of Allah and then distort the Torah after they had understood it while they were knowing?} [Quran 2: 75]

They had the nerve to distort and alter the Book of Allah The Almighty to hide the truth that it contained and all that can prove the prophethood of Muhammad  sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention ) although they knew him well. Allah The Almighty Says (what means): {Those to whom We gave the Scripture know him as they know their own sons. But indeed, a party of them conceal the truth while they know [it].} [Quran 2: 146] Though they knew him well, they did not believe in him and were too arrogant to do so. Allah The Almighty Says (what means): {Among the Jews are those who distort words from their [proper] usages.} [Quran 4: 46]

Amongst the evidences that prove the distortion of the current Tawraah are the descriptions mentioned in it which do not befit the Majesty and Perfection of Allah The Almighty such as: And the LORD God said, Behold, the man has become as one of us, to know good and evil.” [Genesis 3: 22] and “And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart. [Genesis 6: 6].”

Can these be the Words of Allah The Almighty? Can grief and regret be attributed to Allah The Almighty? In fact, such malicious claims entail that Allah The Almighty did not have knowledge of the results of His actions. No, Allah The Almighty is high above any defect and shortcoming. Allah The Almighty has comprehensive knowledge that encompasses everything. Exalted is He and high above what they say by great sublimity.

Another proof of the distortion of the current Tawraah is what is mentioned in it of describing prophets in a way that negates the infallibility that Allah The Almighty granted them. They mentioned that Ibraaheem (Abraham) is a liar, that Haroon (Aaron) called Banu Israa’eel (Children of Israel) to worship the Calf, and that Sulaymaan (Solomon) worshiped idols to please his wife. Can any human being who has a sound mind say such words; let alone being revealed by Allah The Almighty to guide humans with it?

Distortion of the Injeel (Gospel)

The Injeel was also distorted and altered and is not in its original state in which Allah The Almighty revealed it. Christians contintued altering and changing its facts so as to attain their desired worldly gains.

The distortion of the current versions of the Injeel can simply be proved if we know that they are four versions of the Injeel selected from many more versions. Such versions reported the words of Prophet ‘Eesa, may Allah exalt his mention. Their writers are known and their names are written on them. In the library of one of the princes in Paris, a version of the Injeel – Injeel (Gospel) of Barnabas - was found. It differed greatly from the other four selected versions of the Injeel and agreed with the Noble Quran in many beliefs and principles.

After we have known for certain that those books have been distorted, then what is the meaning that the Noble Quran came to confirm in the divine books that preceded it? This simply means that the Noble Quran came to enhance and support the truth which was mentioned in the books that came before it, mainly worshiping Allah The Almighty Alone, believing in His Messengers, believing in the reward, observing rights and justice, enjoining good and forbidding evil, and adhering to noble moral standards. Allah The Almighty Says (what means): {Say, "O People of the Scripture, you are [standing] on nothing until you uphold [the law of] the Torah, the Gospel, and what has been revealed to you from your Lord."} [Quran 5: 68]

Consequently, the Quran is the only way with which we can know the sound divine teachings. It is the book whose fundamental principles are preserved, its teachings are not distorted, and the Ummah received it from the angel who brings down the Revelation to the Messengers - Jibreel, may Allah exalt his mention - who came down to the Messenger  sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention ). This preservation was not granted to any book other than the Noble Quran. In fact, the Quran comprises the most sublime principles, methods and systems. It has all that humans need of beliefs, acts of worship, morals, and transactions. It befits all times and places. It is sufficient to create a Muslim individual, a virtuous family and a righteous society. Truthful is the one who speaks with it. Just is the one who passes judgment according to it. Guided to the right path is the one who adheres to its teachings. Allah The Almighty Says (what means): {There has come to you from Allah a light and a clear Book. By which Allah guides those who pursue His pleasure to the ways of peace and brings them out from darknesses into the light, by His permission, and guides them to a straight path.} [Quran 5: 15-16]

The Previous Divinely Revealed Books Were not Universal

The books that Allah The Almighty revealed, other than the Quran, addressed certain people in certain times and they agreed with the Noble Quran in some rulings and laws. Allah The Almighty Says (what means): {And We ordained for them therein a life for a life, an eye for an eye, a nose for a nose, an ear for an ear, a tooth for a tooth, and for wounds is legal retribution.} [Quran 5: 45]
Muslims believe in what is mentioned in these books as long as it does not contradict with the Quran. They also believe that the Noble Quran is the main constitution for all people.

Characteristics of the Noble Quran

The Noble Quran has many characteristics that distinguish it from the books that came before it. Amongst such characteristics are:
• It has all the divine instructions that Allah The Almighty revealed in the Tawraah, the Injeel, and all the teachings that Allah The Almighty revealed.

• It supports the truth which was mentioned in these books regarding worshiping Allah The Almighty Alone, believing in His Messengers, believing in reward, observing and establishing rights, enjoining good and forbidding evil, and adhering to noble moral standards. Allah The Almighty Says (what means): {And We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], the Book in truth, confirming that which preceded it of the Scripture and as a criterion over it. So judge between them by what Allah has revealed and do not follow their inclinations away from what has come to you of the truth. To each of you We prescribed a law and a method.} [Quran 5: 48]

That is to say, Allah The Almighty revealed the Noble Quran which is truthful in all that is mentioned in it and it confirms the preceding Scriptures that were revealed by Allah The Almighty. It is a witness over them. It explains the distortion and alteration that inflicted them. Then Allah The Almighty ordered His Prophet  sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention ) to judge between all people, Muslims and non-Muslims, by what Allah The Almighty has revealed in the Noble Quran and not to follow them in disobeying Allah The Almighty.

• Allah The Almighty prescribed a law for every nation with its rulings and different interactions that befit its nature and inclinations in the best way. The main pillars of creeds are the same in all messages. Allah The Almighty Says (what means): {He has ordained for you of religion what He enjoined upon Noah and that which We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], and what We enjoined upon Abraham and Moses and Jesus - to establish the religion and not be divided therein.} [Quran 42: 13]
Then when Islam came, it abrogated all other laws and methods. It established only one creed and method for all people.

• The original versions of the books that were revealed before the Quran were lost. Nothing remained of them except their translations, unlike the Noble Quran which was preserved as a whole with its Soorahs, verses, words, and letters exactly as Jibreel, may Allah exalt his mention, recited it to the Messenger of Allah  sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention ). In the previous books, the words of humans were mixed with the Words of Allah The Almighty. No one can recognize the words of Allah The Almighty from those of humans. As for the Noble Quran, all of its words are from Allah The Almighty and they were never mixed with the Hadeeths of the Messenger or the speeches of the companions or any other person.

• None of those books can in any way be attributed to the Messenger to whom it was revealed. The Tawraah (Torah) was not written by Moosa (Moses). In fact, it was written many centuries after Moosa. The Noble Quran is the only book that was proved to be decisively attributed to the Messenger  sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention ) (even if he did not write it down himself, for he ordered the writers of the revelation to record every verse immediately after it was revealed to him).

• The teachings of the Noble Quran are the Words of Allah The Almighty that can achieve happiness to all humanity. So Allah The Almighty Willed for it to last forever. He preserved and protected it from distortion. Allah The Almighty Says (what means):

• {And indeed, it is a mighty Book Falsehood cannot approach it from before it or from behind it; [it is] a revelation from a [Lord who is] Wise and Praiseworthy.} [Quran 41: 41-42]

• {Indeed, it is We who sent down the Quran and indeed, We will be its guardian} [Quran 15: 9]

The wisdom behind that is to make the Quran the argument of Allah The Almighty over people. The Quran is for all worlds and all people. It is not for a specific people unlike the previous heavenly books. Allah The Almighty Says (what means): {And We have not sent you except comprehensively to mankind as a bringer of good tidings and a warner.} [Quran 34: 28]

• The Quran is the guidance that leads to all that is good. Allah The Almighty Says (what means): {Alif, Lam, Meem. This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those conscious of Allah} [Quran 2: 1-2] Allah The Almighty wants His word to spread and reach minds and ears everywhere. This will not be attained except if the Quran is easy to memorize and understand. Nothing in the Quran is difficult for people to understand or fulfill. Allah The Almighty Says (what means): {And We have certainly made the Quran easy for remembrance, so is there any who will remember?} [Quran 54: 17]

• The Quran is also the miracle of the Messenger  sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention ). In fact, if the whole world gathered in order to produce something like what is mentioned in the Quran, they could not produce the like of it for it is as Allah The Almighty Says (what means): {And indeed, it is a mighty Book. Falsehood cannot approach it from before it or from behind it; [it is] a revelation from a [Lord who is] Wise and Praiseworthy.} [Quran 41: 41-42]

• The Quran is an invitation to every good matter and forbids every vice. Allah The Almighty Says (what means): {O mankind, there has come to you instruction from your Lord and healing for what is in the breasts.} [Quran 10: 57]

• The Quran is a cure for souls. It purifies them from their diseases. It is a remedy from disbelief, misguidance, hatred and envy. Allah The Almighty Says (what means): {And We send down of the Quran that which is healing and mercy for the believers, but it does not increase the wrongdoers except in loss.} [Quran 17: 82] - islamweb.net

JESUS’ GREATEST COMMANDMENT

The man was a teacher.  He taught the Law of Moses.  He was impressed to see Jesus answering the questions of hypocrites and heretics with wisdom:

"One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating.  Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, ‘Of all the commandments, which is the most important?’"

He felt it was his opportunity to ask Jesus, the Great Teacher, what was the most important commandment, how he can be saved, enter life and the Kingdom of God.

Now, we need to shed all our biases, everything we have been taught in Sunday schools, and all the teachings of mortal men.  All who love Jesus should let him talk:

"The most important one," answered Jesus, "is this: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one.  Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’"

A great answer to a great question: accept the Lord our God is One, love Him, and worship Him to the best of your ability.

Jesus was not finished.  He had more to teach.  Obviously Jesus was teaching the man everything he needed to get into the Kingdom of God.  Jesus added:

"…The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’"

The Great Teacher further clarified:

"There is no commandment greater than these."

The man who questioned Jesus repeated the commandments to make sure he got them right:

Mark 12:32 "‘Well said, teacher,’ the man replied.  ‘You are right in saying that God is one and there is no other but him…’"

Jesus seeing the man had learned the greatest commandment correctly gave him the good news:

Mark 12:34 "When Jesus saw that he had answered wisely, he said to him, ‘You are not far from the kingdom of God.’"

There are some significant lessons in this story:

First, Jesus taught the man more than he asked, yet he did not say he is the son of God, or the Savior sent to redeem mankind of its sins.  He did not say anything remotely similar to what people are instructed to repeat to be ‘born again’ in Christ, "You should individually receive me, accept me as the Son of God, your personal Lord and Savior who will die on the cross for your sins and will rise from the dead.  Let the Holy Spirit fill you…"

Take what Jesus said and leave what people have added.

Second, salvation depends on this commandment.  Jesus made it clear when another man approached Jesus to learn from him (Mark 10:17-29).  The man fell on his knees and said to Jesus:

Mark 10:17-18 "Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?"  Jesus replied: "Why do you call me good?  No one is good — except God alone."

Third, Jesus confirmed there is no commandment greater than these.  In case, someone might think the greatest commandment changed afterwards, Jesus told us:

Matthew 5:17-19 "For assuredly, I say to you, till the heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one title will by no mean pass from the law till all is fulfilled.  Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven."

Fourth, anyone who loves Jesus and wants to enter life must keep the greatest commandment of Jesus as he said:

John 14:15 "If you love me, keep my commandments."

Matthew 19:17 "If you want to enter life, obey the commandments."

Fifth, a sincere Christian should accept what Jesus said without twisting his words or finding hidden meaning in them.  Jesus taught exactly what Moses taught some 2,000 years before him:

Deuteronomy 6:4-5 "Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.  Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength."

Jesus, may the mercy and blessings of God be upon him, taught the same eternal truth ALL the prophets of God taught to their people: God is One, worship Him alone.

Deuteronomy 6:13 "Fear the Lord your God, serve Him only and take your oaths in His name."

Deuteronomy 5:7 "You shall have no other God besides Me."

Isaiah 43:11 "I even, I am your Lord and besides Me, there is no Savior."

Hosea 13:4 "I am the Lord your God who brought you out of the Egypt.  You shall acknowledge no God but me, no savior except me."

Psalms 95:6-7 "O come, let us bow down and worship, let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker.  For we are the people of His pasture and the sheep of His voice and He is our God."

Jesus emphasized this teaching to Satan as well:

Matthew 4:10 "Away from me, Satan! For it is written: Worship the Lord your God, and serve Him only."

Sixth, the Quran confirms the greatest commandment of Jesus.  The Quran teaches us exactly that God sent all the prophets with the same teaching: to worship the One true God alone.

"…And your God is One God: there is no god but He…" (Quran 2:163)

"And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him..." (Quran 17:23)

"And We did not send any Messenger before you (O Muhammad) but We revealed to him (saying): ‘none has the right to be worshipped but I, so worship Me.’" (Quran 21:25)

Seventh, on the Day of Resurrection, the Quran tells us that God will ask Jesus:

"And [beware the Day] when God will say, ‘O Jesus, Son of Mary, did you say to the people, ‘Take me and my mother as gods besides God?...’" (Quran 5:116)

Jesus will respond:

"He will say, ‘Limitless are You in Your glory! It was not for me to say that to which I have no right.  If I had said it, You would have known it.  You know what is within myself, and I do not know what is within Yourself.  Verily, it is You alone who fully knows all the things that are beyond the reach of a created being’s perception.  I said not to them except what you commanded me – to worship God, my Lord and your Lord.  And I was a witness over them as long as I was among them; but when You took me up, You alone had been their keeper:’ for You are witness unto everything.  If You should punish them – indeed they are Your servants; but if You forgive them – indeed it is You who is the Exalted in Might, the Wise." (Quran 5:116-118)

Looking for Universal Rules and Inner Peace

Fatima Grimm was one of the first German Muslim women to embrace Islam. Born in 1934, she accepted Islam in 1960, during a time when Islam was not a topic of everyday life in Germany. She gained great prominence as a German convert and worked for different German Muslim organizations. She died in 2013 in the city of Hamburg.

Searching For Universal Rules

Before I accepted Islam, I was looking for universal rules. I wanted rules to hold on to. Rules that actually have validity. Even back then, in the late 1950s, there seemed to be a tendency towards individualism.

Everybody claimed to have found the truth. Everybody had different norms. And interpreted rules according to their personal taste. That confused me.

Weren’t there any universal rules? And who was able to come up with these kind of universal rules? A great philosopher? Some genius? And how long would these universal rules then be applicable?

Searching for God

All my pondering led me back to the question about God. My heart had already affirmed His existence. There was no question about that. All the good that happened to me, must have had a divine source.

My heart wanted to show gratitude. But to whom? Who was God? Was He the father-God sitting on a cloud in the heaven? Or was He the suffering god on the cross? Or this smiling figure from the far east? I wanted to give gratitude to God. But my heart wanted to be absolutely sure about God. There was no compromising on sincerity. And it had to be with complete conviction.

That is the Truth

After I survived a critical surgery, I continued searching for the purpose in life. Why was I still alive? Then, for the first time, I consciously came in contact with Islam. I was still wary because of all the disappointments with my search for the divine truth I had made before.

So I read the Quran. I talked to the very few Muslims around me. And my heart could only say: Yes. That’s it. That is the truth. I did not find any unbridgeable contradictions. Everything made perfect sense. And that was when I started to feel inner peace inside my heart. It was a victory.

Only the First Step

However, becoming Muslim was only the first step. And to keep that inner peace needs constant working, learning, trusting in God. I learned that it was extremely important to follow the rules given to us by Allah. Only by following His rules, we can feel inner peace.

That includes especially praying. Meeting our Lord five times every day. Only if we have the inner peace in our heart, we can try and go out. To spread peace.

However, we should do this not through tiresome preaching. But by being a good example. By living Islam in our daily life. And by living peace in our everyday interactions with other people.

Keeping Our Inner Peace

If we want to keep our inner peace, we have to ground ourselves in deep knowledge and recognition of God. Allah’s holy book, the Quran, is an infinite source of inner peace.

Reading and pondering the Quran everyday is a steady and reliable help in our everyday life. And we should always realize that the life in this world is only temporary. By realizing this, we will be freed from the most difficult fears of this world. The fear of death.

As Muslims, we know that we will return to our Lord, the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful. And inshaAllah we will be given a place in His paradise.

JESUS, MUHAMMAD AND THEIR RABB

Jesus,-Muhammad-and-Their-Rabb.jpgFor the past two years, the celebrations of the birth of the last two Messengers of God on Earth seem to have come around the same time.

Christians traditionally celebrate the birth of Jesus (peace be upon him) on the 25th of December.  Some Muslims celebrate the birth of the Prophet Muhammad, may the mercy and blessings of God be upon him, on the 12th of Rabiul Awwal of the Islamic calendar.

However, one of the most important things to remember is that the celebration of the birth of our beloved Prophets is not by holding festivities or by congratulating one another.  Neither should the celebration of their birth be during one day of one month.  Rather, the celebration of the birth of Jesus and Muhammad (peace be upon them) should be done at every month and every day, through following them in their orders and prohibitions.  The message that both of them brought is what made them special, as God had ordained them as Messengers who delivered a message.

It is also important to look at the times when their messages were delivered and how that can help us relate their message to our current times.

Jesus (peace be upon him) was sent to a group of believers who had lost their way.  Corruption was rife and religion was a tool used to control the people and make profits.  The Rabbis of that time practically controlled society with an iron fist.  Religion was used to keep themselves above the law while ensuring that everyone else had to turn to them for guidance.

In such a corrupt and bankrupt world, God sent Jesus as a Prophet with miracle after miracle.  From his birth to his ascension to heaven, Jesus performed many miracles by the permission of God.  However, it is not the miracles but what they signify that was important—the miracles pointed towards God.  Multiple passages in the Quran narrate Jesus telling his people to "worship God, who is your Rabb and my Rabb." This concept of Rabb[1]  is what set apart the messages of the Prophets from all other religions and ideologies.

Similarly, the Prophet Muhammad was sent to a morally bankrupt society.  Corruption was rife.  Women were considered subhuman and the poor and the needy were taken advantage of.  People worshiped idols, and the owners of the idols and the temples made money of the people’s faithfulness to their false gods.  It was at this time that while the world was burning, God sent the Prophet Muhammad to be the peacemaker, to be the Messenger, to be a mercy to the universe.  His central message also revolved around taking Allah (God) as a "Rabb" and forsaking all other deities.

What is it though about taking God as a "Rabb"? What does it entail that made their messages so unique and great that even today thousands of years later, their message is the one that we are still drawn towards?

Among the many names of Allah (God) in the Quran, "Rabb" is among the most common that is mentioned.  It is mentioned at the start of most supplications of the Quran as well.  Rabb is a very comprehensive word that covers a lot of meanings and a lot of the actions of God.

Imam as-Sa’dee beautifully explains:

"Ar-Rabb is the One who nurtures and sustains all of His slaves, by regulating the affairs and granting all types of favors and blessings.  More specifically, He is the One who nurtures and sustains his sincere friends by correcting and purifying their hearts, souls and manners."

Imam Ibn Kathir adds: "Ar-Rabb is the owner who has full authority over his property."

The combination gives us one of the crucial aspects of our relationship with God—that we are tied to Him through a bond of being His abd (slave).  As our Rabb, He is the One who owns us and who provides us with all that we have, all that we own, all that we desire and keeps blessing throughout our life.  As part of the contract is that we are His slaves who try our best to obey Him and worship Him alone.

While initially this might sound a bit constrictive, this is actually a notion that suddenly frees us from all our other burdens.  Now, it does not matter what people expect of us, as long we are doing that which pleases our Lord.  We know that if there are needs that we have, we can ask our Lord for help.  He will provide in a way that He decides best.  Whenever we make a decision, work towards something and things do not work out our way, we still find solace in the fact that our Rabb who has given us so much surely has a better plan for us.

At a societal level as well, it brings changes.  How can I hurt someone else, when I know that this will displease our Rabb? And when as a human we make that mistake, remembering our Rabb will humble us and make us apologize.  We will think twice before sinning, and try our best not to sin.  Whenever we do sin, we will rush to seek His forgiveness.  Awareness of God as our Rabb cannot let one commit criminal activities either.  If we all endeared ourselves to God, wishing to be His slaves and trying our best to follow his commands, we would have a vastly different society.

In a world that is increasingly becoming godless and insecure, it is this message of taking God as our Rabb that we need to turn back to.  It is the same message that we should relay to our fellow human beings, both the oppressor and the oppressed.  To the oppressed, it will be a great source of relief and ease knowing that their Rabb sees all, hears all and has plans for them.  To the oppressor, it is a message that God willing will show them some sense and make them change their ways.  If not, then perhaps the fear of a Lord who doesn’t forget might help change their ideals.

The message of taking God as our Rabb completely in our lives might initially seem a bit overwhelming but can be done in a step by step process.  It is a message that we as Muslims need to remind ourselves every day as well, as it is easy to forget in the rush of day to day life.

Each day is a day full of decisions.  At each decision we take in our lives, we should ask ourselves, "What would God want me to do?"

That is one question that can help take us far.  That is one question that can help change our societies.  That is one question that can help us truly celebrate the legacies of our beloved Prophets, Jesus and Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon them). - islamreligion.com
