Question
I heard that in prayer a person should stifle his yawn if he can. What should he do if he can't?
Answer
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Yawning is from Satan. If one of you feels the urge to yawn, he should restrain it as much as possible.” [Sahîh al-Bukhârî]
Please note that this ruling is general for all times and is not specific for prayer.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) also said: “Yawning in prayer is an act of Satan, so when one of you yawns he should restrain it as much as possible.” In another version it reads: “He should place his hand upon his mouth.” [Sunan al-Tirmidhî and Sunan Ibn Mâjah with a sound chain of transmission]
And Allah knows best.
