Moving finger during tashahhud

Image result for moving finger during tashahhud

Question

Some scholars claim that moving the finger in the tashahhud is the proven sunnah while others emphatically claim that the finger should be pointed without moving it. I do not know what to do.

Answer

There is a hadîth related through `Abd Allah b. al-Zubayr that the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to point by his finger in supplication but did not move it. [Related in Sunan Abî Dâwûd(988,990), Sunan al-Nasâ’î (1270) with this wording, and in Sahîh Muslim (579) without the phrase “but did not move it”, all with the chain of transmission from `Amir b. `Abd Allah from `Abd Allah b. Zubayr from the Prophet (peace be upon him)]

The hadith regarding pointing with the index finger during tashahhud was related by `Asim b. Kulayb b. Shihâb. It was related by al-Bukhârî in al-Adab, al-Tirmidhî, Abu Dâwûd, Ibn Khuzaymah.

There is an addition to this hadith by Zâ’dah b. Qudâmah that says: “I saw the Prophet (peace be upon him) moving his index finger upon supplication”. This addition is weak. Moreover, the hadîth itself is not authentically related.

And Allah knows best.
