Question
If a person is not able to read the actual Quran, but instead listens to it intently on cd or by downloading it online, does this count as having 'read' the Quran?
Answer
Allah knows best. If the person’s sincere intention is to worship Allah and to listen attentively to the Qur’ân and reflect on it, then a person’s actions are rewardable according to the strength of the intention. This is especially the case for a person who is blind or who otherwise is truly incapable of reading the Qur’ân.
As for someone who finds difficulty in learning or reading the Qur’ân, we encourage that person to learn it and to do his or her best to read it.
We say to that person: You should read the Qur’ân and try your best to learn how to read it properly. As long as you try your best, you will not incur sin for your mistakes. Instead, you will be rewarded for your attempt.
Our Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Whoever reads one letter of Allah’s book will be rewarded one good deed and the good deed doubles to ten times. I do not say “Alif Lâm Mîm” is one letter, but Alif is one letter, Lâm is one letter, and Mîm is one letter. [Sunan al-Tirmidhî(2910)]
Those who find it difficult receive a double reward. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “An expert with the Qur’ân is with the noble and righteous (angelic) scribes. The one who reads the Qur’ân but falters and finds it difficult receives a double reward.” [Sahîh Muslim (798)]
And Allah knows best.
