Question
When Islamic Law stipulates that something should be carried out before or after midnight, does this mean 12:00 AM?
Answer
There is nothing in the Sunnah whatsoever that refers to times like 12:00 AM, since this manner of timekeeping was not being employed in Arabia at that time.
What they talked about were things like the middle of the night which is sometimes much earlier or much later than 12:00 AM, depending on the time of the year. It is the time halfway between Maghrib (sunset) and Fajr (dawn).

And Allah knows best.
