Question
If, while praying in congregation behind the imam, I make a mistake in the performance of my prayer - like standing up after the second unit of prayer - do I have to perform the prostration of forgetfulness (sujûd al-sahw) on my own?
Answer
When a person who prays in congregation behind the imam forgets something, he is not supposed to perform the prostration of forgetfulness (sujûd al-sahw). The imam’s prayer will be sufficient for the imam himself and for those who pray behind him.
`Umar has related that: “There is no prostration of forgetfulness for the one who prays behind the imam.” [This is a statement of `Umar. It is not authentically attributed to the Prophet (peace be upon him)]
Also, this ruling conforms to the general principle about congregational prayer that was set forth by the Prophet (peace be upon him) when he said: “Verily, the imam is appointed for others to follow.”
And Allah knows best.
