Question
Could you please tell me some signs of weak faith and some signs of strong faith for the purpose of critical self-evaluation?
Answer
The signs of the weakness or strength of a person’s faith manifest themselves in a person’s ability to engage in good deeds and abstain from sin. Having a strong inclination to do good deeds and avoid misdeeds is an indication of strong faith. Likewise, a person exhibiting the opposite tendency is giving an indication of weak faith.
There is a positive correlation between strong faith and acts of obedience to Allah, while there is a negative correlation between strong faith and acts of disobedience to Allah.
Scholars throughout the ages have declared that the faith of a believer increases and decreases. It increases through obedience and decreases through sin.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “The adulterer does not commit adultery while he is a believer.” [Sahîh al-Bukhârî and Sahîh Muslim]
In another narration, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “If the servant commits adultery, he will go out of his faith. This faith will become as a black shadow. If he refrains (from doing sins) the faith will come back to him.”
This is because the sinner will not have done what he did except on account of his weakness of faith. By contrast, the one who performs deeds of righteousness is encouraged to do so by the strength of his faith.
