Question

The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to seek Allah's forgiveness more than most other people. Why is this the case, since he is the best of people and the one whom Allah had forgiven everything?

Answer

There are numerous verses in the Qur’an extolling the virtues of seeking the forgiveness of Allah. It is an act of virtue, an act of worship in its own right. Indeed, seeking forgiveness for our sins from anyone else is an act of gross polytheism.

Allah says: “And who can forgive sins except Allah?” [Sûrah Al `Imrân: 135]

Allah commands us to seek his forgiveness, saying: “But ask forgiveness of your Lord, and turn unto him (in repentance): for my Lord is indeed full of mercy and loving-kindness” [Sûrah Hûd: 90]

The Prophet (peace be upon him), was the best of all people, the most perfect in his conduct, and the most ardent in performing righteous deeds. Naturally, he the foremost in seeking the forgiveness of his Lord.

He said: “Verily I ask Allah for forgiveness more than seventy times a day.” [Sahîh al-Bukhârî(6309)]

He did this in spite of the fact that all of his sins were forgiven.

When Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) occupied himself in prayer, he stood for such a long time that his feet would become swollen. `A’ishah asked: “O Messenger of Allah! Do you do this in spite of the fact that your earlier and later sins have been pardoned for you?”

Thereupon, he replied: “O `A’ishah! Should I not, then, be a grateful servant?” [Sahîh al-Bukhârî (1103) and Sahîh Muslim (2820), but the text is quoted as it appears in Sahîh Muslim

The fact that our Prophet (peace be upon him) sought Allah's forgiveness so much shows us how important it is for us to do the same. The Prophet (peace be upon him) is indeed our best example.

And Allah knows best.
