Question

I heard there are eight gates of Paradise. Is this true? What are they and how can a person gain admittance to Paradise through them?

Answer

Paradise has eight gates, as stated by Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him): “If any of you performs wudû’ thoroughly and then says: ‘I bear witness that there is no God but Allah alone without partner, and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger’ – then all of the eight gates of Paradise will be opened for him and he may enter from whichever gate he pleases.” [Sahîh Muslim

The Prophet (peace be upon him) also said: “If any of (Allah’s) servants has three children who die before reaching puberty, they will meet him at the eight gates of Paradise and he may enter from any of the eight gates he pleases.” [Musnad Ahmad – with an authentic chain of transmission]

The Prophet (peace be upon him) also said: “Whoever says: I bear witness that there is no God but Allah alone without partner, and (I bear witness) that Muhammad is his servant and messenger, and (I bears witness) that Jesus is Allah’s servant, the son of His female servant, and His word that He bestowed upon Mary, and a spirit from Him, and (I bear witness) that Paradise is true and that Hell is true – whoever says this, Allah will admit him into Paradise from any of the eight gates he pleases.” [Sahîh Muslim

Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) also said: “It will be proclaimed in Paradice for whoever spends twofold in the path of Allah: O servant of Allah, this is good. So whoever had been of those devoted to prayer, he will be called to the Gate of Prayer. Whoever had been engaged in striving in the defense of Islam, will be called to the Gate of Striving. Whoever had been devoted to charity will be called to the Gate of Charity. Whoever had been committed to the observance of fasts will be called to the Gate of Luxuriance.”

Abû Bakr, upon hearing this, asked: “O Messenger of Allah! Is it absolutely necessary for someone to enter form one of these gates? Will anyone be called to enter from all the gates?”

The Prophet (peace be upon him) replied: “Yes, and I hope that you will be one of them.” [Sahîh al-Bukhârî and Sahîh Muslim

In the narration found in Sahîh Muslim, there is mention of other gates: the Gate of Repentance, the Gate of Suppressing Anger, The Gate of Those Well-Pleased, and finally the Gate of the Right-Hand which will be entered through by those who will enter Paradise without having their deeds reckoned.

In Sunan al-Tirmidhî, the Gate of Muhammad is mentioned, which is also referred to as the Gate of Mercy and which is none other than the Gate of Repentance which continues to remain open and never closes. However, on the day that the Sun rises from the East, this gate will close and will not open again until the Day of Resurrection.

More gates are mentioned until a total of eleven are to be counted: the Gate of Hajj, the Gate of `Umrah, and the Gate of Upholding Famly Ties.

Al-Ajurî also mentions the Gate of the Late Morning Prayer which those who used to be constant in their observance of the Duhâ Prayer will enter through.

And Allah knows best.
