Question

Is there any preference in Islam for green clothing?

Answer

Wearing green colored garments is something preferable. It has been related that the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to wear green garments. Abû Ramthah said: “I saw the Prophet (peace be upon him) giving a sermon while wearing a green cloak.” [Sunan al-Tirmidhî and Musnad Ahmad with an authentic line of transmission]

Ya`lâ b. Umayyah said: “The Prophet (peace be upon him) circumambulated the Ka`bah while wearing a green cloak.” [Sunan al-Tirmidhî and Musnad Ahmad with an authentic line of transmission].

It seems that these garments were not solid green, but had green stripes. We derive this from the fact that the type of cloak being described in these hadîth were striped. Imam Ibn al-Qayyim asserts that this type of cloak: “… is the one contains green stripes.”

There is a chapter in Sahîh al-Bukârî entitled: “The Green Garments”. In it, al-Bukhârî mentions that `A’ishah had a green headscarf.

Ibn Battâl says: “Green clothing is the manner of dress of the people of Paradise, which gives it a measure of distinction.” He states this in reference to the verse of the Qur’ân that reads “And they will wear green garments of fine silk and heavy brocade.” [Sûrah al-Kahf: 31]

Imam al-Shawkânî concurs, saying: “It is preferred to wear green because it is the dress of the people of Paradise, is the most pleasant to behold, and is among the best looking to people.”
