Question
Can a Muslim ask Allah to grant him the honored place in Paradise known as al-Wasîlah?
Answer
It is not permissible for a person to ask Allah to grant him the honored place in Paradise known as al-Wasîlah.
Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “Ask Allah to grant me al-Wasîlah, for indeed it is a place in Paradise that is for only one servant from among Allah’s servants, and I hope to be that one.” [Sahîh Muslim (384)]
This hope from the Prophet (peace be upon him) is a hope that will come to pass. This honored station in Paradise is exclusively for our Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). He alone is to be honored with the Praiseworthy Station (al-Maqâm al-Mahmûd) on the Day of Resurrection and with a-Wasîlah in Paradise.
Among the reasons that Allah has made for him attaining these places of honor are the supplications that he instructed his followers to make for him after hearing the call to prayer.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Whoever says upon hearing the call to prayer: ‘O Allah! Lord of this complete call and this established prayer, grant Muhammad al-Wasîlah and the distinction and raise him forth to the Praiseworthy Station that You promised him’ will be entitled to my intercession on the day of Resurrection.” [Sahîh al-Bukhârî (614)]
What a Muslim should ask for himself is to be admitted into Paradise and to be spared from being consigned to Hell. The Prophet (peace be upon him) encouraged us to ask Allah for the lofty level in Paradise known as al-Firdaws, the highest and most central place in Paradise. However, those of us who wish to ask for Paradise and to be admitted into al-Firdaws should do the things that Allah has called upon us to do in order for us to get there by His grace.
