Question

Allah says that He is the Light of the heavens and the Earth. What does this mean? Is this an attribute of Allah?

Answer

Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jamâ`ah assert whatever Allah ascribes to Himself of His attributes as well as whatever the Prophet (peace be upon him) ascribed to Him. However, we assert them without making them like the attributes of created things and at the same time without rejecting their true meanings.

“The Light” which is asserted in both the Qur’an and Sunnah is one of these attributes.

Thus, the position of Ahl al Sunnah wa al-Jamâ`ah is that Allah is described with the attribute of Light, but this attribute is not the light of created things.

His light does not look like the light of the Sun or the Moon or any other light-giving object. Allah says: “There is nothing whatever like unto Him, and He is the one that hears and sees”. There is nothing and no one that looks like Him or has attributes similar to any of His.

This applies to all other attributes of Allah.

Mâlik and Rabî`ah both replied: “Mounting the throne is known and its nature is unknown, and it is an innovation to ask about it.” when asked the question “How did the Most Gracious mount the throne?”
